We arrived a day early and after hours however, the nighttime attendant was very helpful and was able to call and get us a site for the evening. We had to move the next day but that was to be expected. The campground is on very hilly ground and their were very few level sites. The office staff was very helpful and friendly and were able to give you a lot of information about the surrounding area for dining and entertainment. Unfortunately, as previously stated by other reviewers, there are a lot of very loud trains which go by at all hours of the day and night. The road to the campground is fairly narrow and hilly with some sharp turns but has a good surface. The campground needs a little attention to be rated any higher. Their interior roads are getting bad and there is very little room to park a "toad" vehicle.
This was our first visit to the resort and, to say the least, we were extremely satisfied with the entire park. While the rate is expensive, you get what you pay for. The staff was very friendly and extremely helpful. The gentleman who escorted us to our site put us on site better than any I have ever experienced. Our site was equipped with a complete set of outdoor furniture and the site was level and extremely well maintained as was the entire park. The park is located between Savannah and Charleston and allows easy access to both areas. I would highly recommend this park to everyone.
The park appears to be more suited to the permanent residents than travelers. The people at the office were not very friendly or knowledgeable. The park is divided into three seperate areas and the two bathhouses are both located in the area where the permanent residents are located. The site we were given was approximately 1/2 mile from the restrooms/bathhouses. The washers and dryers were filthy, the tennis courts were overgrown with weeds, the pool was dirty and the nearby interstate highway traffic sound was very loud. When we arrived at our site, the 50 amp plug was damaged on our power pole, but usable. The second day of our visit, we returned from touring the area to find that the power pole and entire meter box was laying in pieces next to our motorhome with our power cord lying unplugged next to it. When I went to the office to inquire about what had happened, I was told that the handyman had left to find a part and would be back soon. I asked why we were given a site which needed repairs when there were several sites adjacent which appeared to be in good repair. Our overall impressions were, obviously, not good and we could not recommend this campground to anyone. There are two other campgrounds witinin a mile or so which might be a better choice.
We stayed in this campground throughout the winter which is why our daily rate is so small. The park is very open and easily accessible but, unfortunately, the is no lake in Grand Lake Resort. Orange Lake, evidently, had a sinkhole appear several years ago and, along with the recent dry weather in the area, the shoreline is probably 20 feet from the docks at the marina. There is no way to access the lake for fishing or boating at the resort. The golf course is nice but could have a little more care given to keep the greens in better shape. Some of them are in really bad condition. The water situation in the park needs to be improved. Almost everyone has to have at least one filter but most have two or more. We had a full coach filter and drinking water filter as well as a water softener and we still had a few times when the water was cloudy or smelly. The park is situated about half way between Ocala and Gainesville, 15 miles each way, which makes grocery shopping a fairly long trip. There was a very large turnover of resort employees while we were there. I think there were 3 different managers during our stay and several workkampers were let go early prior to their contracts being up. All this lead to a lot of turmoil and kept a lot of the residents guessing what was going to happen next. The campground has the potential to be a first class resort if the facilities would be upgraded and improved. But as it now stands, I could only give it a rating of 5.
